One Morning in Maine
On an autumn trip to Deer Isle, Maine, I made a point of positioning myself each morning, with a cup of coffee, in a nearby cove. From here, I could soak in the intense views of water and sky so unique to the Maine coast. One spectacular morning, I noticed a lobster boat named Perseverance plowing out of the harbor and through the water to reach each of its yellow and red-stripped buoys; the sun assuring the lobstermen on board that this was indeed the right place to be in the world that morning. But as I watched, the weather surprisingly shifted, stirring up gray and rough waters. Still the Perseverance motored on.
I was struck that the Perseverance must embrace a silent faith as she launches out each day into the erratic and unpredictable Maine sea. Like the Perseverance, we too face a world that is erratic and unpredictable. And, each day we can chose to sit safely in the harbor or we can voyage ahead through life changes with a sense of hope, trusting that even rough waters must hold within them an incomprehensible buoyancy that can keep us afloat and motoring forward!
