Building the Bonds of Friendship at Midlife & Beyond

Good friends are like vitamins! Researchers confirm what we know intuitively: people who have reliable social support live longer and healthier lives. They have stronger hearts and experience less depression and anxiety. Despite these, and other positive effects, many of us experience a “friendship gap” when we go through life changes such as a move, job change, family shift, or retirement. Such gaps can lead to a sense of isolation, self-doubt and loneliness.

This program explores how we can strengthen and expand our friendship network. Participants will learn friendship-building strategies for real life application in this interactive and upbeat program. The format combines self-reflection, guided discussion and individual action planning.

In our book Building the Bonds of Friendship at Midlife and Beyond,  Amy D’Aprix, MSW, PhD, and I explore the transformation and quality of friendship with 16 Friendship Builders that target specific exercises on how to build a group of close friends. The book and companion CD include tips and examples to help readers seed, weed, and feed friendships! Here are the winning ways to expand social ties and build a close circle of authentic social support to enrich our lives as we age.

I’ll be leading my annual teleseminar called “Feeding, Weeding, and Seeding Your Friendships”. If you’re interested in attending this fun and informative session, send me an email at vicki@passagepoints.com or call at 919-260-7536. I’ll give you all the details. Love to have you on the call!

And, this Spring, I’ll be conducting the popular 4-week class, “Building the Bonds of Friendship”, at the University of North Carolina Community Classroom Series.
